Born and raised in Miami to Cuban parents, Julio of Miami™ creates visual art heavily influenced by the contrasting imagery, rich histories, and intersecting cultures of both nations, anchored by his Spanish heritage. Driven by a lifelong obsession with creating his own artistic worlds, Julio has been exploring visual mediums since childhood—evolving from early collages and drawings into teenage explorations of prose, poetry, music, and cinematic film.
Following a higher education in English Literature and Journalism/Mass Communications with an advertising focus, Julio spent over three decades as an elite creative producer in the print, video, and advertising industries. As a methodical problem-solver adept at asking the right questions to birth great ideas—and a key force behind hundreds of multi-medium campaigns, visual concepts, and commercials, many of them award-winning—he mastered the complex lifecycle of conceptualizing, vetting, and executing high-level visual ideas from birth to delivery.
Now channeling decades of collected narrative imagery and integrated production mastery back into his lifelong calling, Julio operates as a self-taught, multidisciplinary visual artist driven by a fierce dedication to raw experimentation. Rejecting rigid labels and conventional constraints, his bold, expressionistic practice spans painting, collage, installation, video, and works on paper. His creative world draws from a strikingly varied pantheon of influences—bridging the conceptual depth of visual artist Félix González-Torres, the intricate structural storytelling of filmmaker Christopher Nolan, and the raw, subversive rhythm of poet and writer Allen Ginsberg. These diverse creative streams form the deep inspirations that he is now bringing into the physical world.
Steeped heavily in narrative, Julio’s work visualizes the unique atmospheric conflicts, desire, adventure, and transitions of the 21st century. His thematic vocabulary draws directly from the cadence of classical verse, ancient mythologies, and the brooding, emotional tension characteristic of Romantic literature. Though his artistic output varies dynamically in subject, texture, and style, he remains deeply drawn to exploring the human form and capturing the complexity of figurative staging.
Operating like an "artistic DJ of materials™," Julio pairs a deep reverence for the rendering traditions of the Old Masters with a distinctly contemporary sensibility. His intuitive process manipulates found imagery, graphics, non-traditional mediums, hand-drawn detailing, and raw, painted textures with physical elements like recycled clothes and found objects. Juxtapositioning the classical elegance of human anatomy against the raw, weathered textures of modern street ephemera, the resulting artwork manifests itself as a brilliant, experimental symphony of visuals, materials, and hybrid figures.
Julio lives, creates, and works out of his studio in Miami, Florida.
